Rational use of natural resources, energy saving mechanisms, and the adoption of ‘cleaner’ sources of energy that mitigate greenhouse gas emissions are some of the sustainable development issues that are currently high up on the world’s political and economic agenda. Vivix partakes of these environmental management concerns, and thus adopts in its Goiana plant the cutting-edge sustainability practices currently available in the world.
As an energy management reference, the plant applies the L.E.M.™ (Low Energy Melter™) to its production process, a pioneering technology that allows for greater energy efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, when compared to the average of float glass industries worldwide. Following the country’s climate change policy that favors the use of less polluting energy sources in production activities, natural gas serves as the source of energy for glass melting.
For other stages of the production process and for general plant lighting, Vivix uses electric power from renewable sources (small hydropower plants and bioethanol mills).
The use of energy-saving lamps and the management of waste from both the production process (broken glass) and human consumption (selective waste collection), coupled with optimal use of natural lighting and ventilation, contribute to making the whole process more eco-friendly.
As yet another sustainable measure, Vivix engages in rainwater impounding (for use in the glass manufacturing process) and in ongoing reuse of effluents generated at the unit. Treated water returns to the process and is also used for irrigation of green areas, thus creating a systematic cycle that avoids the discharge of effluents into rivers or water streams.
